A festive home makeover works best in three steps: deep-clean and declutter, refresh walls with bright or earthy festive colours, then add décor. Pearl, soft-sheen or metallic wall finishes, a festive accent wall, refreshed wooden furniture and DIY lamps, shelves or wall hangings give an affordable festive look. Finish painting before decorating so walls are fully dry and fumes have cleared before guests arrive.

Start around four to six weeks before the festival. Use the first week for cleaning, decluttering and repairs, then paint two to three weeks ahead so walls cure and the smell clears. Keep the last week for furniture changes, lighting and décor. Painters are in high demand before Diwali and Durga Puja, so book early.
Focus on spaces guests see and where the family gathers: the entrance, living room and pooja room. A fresh coat of paint or an accent wall in these areas, plus new lighting and décor, gives the biggest visual impact. Bedrooms and utility areas can wait for a later refresh. Fresh doormats, cushion covers and lighting in these spaces complete the look quickly.
Yes. A single accent wall behind the sofa, dining table or pooja unit in a rich festive colour or metallic finish is one of the most cost-effective festive decoration ideas for home. Keep the other walls neutral so the accent stands out, and choose a shade you'll still like after the festival.
Use removable options that don't damage walls: fabric torans, fairy lights with adhesive hooks, wall decals, framed art on picture rails or easels, and garlands of marigold or paper flowers. Floor rangoli, lanterns and textiles such as cushions and runners add colour without touching the paint. These can all be packed away and reused for the next festival.
Wait until the paint is fully dry, at least a few days for most interior emulsions, before sticking tape or hooks. Use removable adhesive hooks rated for the weight and remove them slowly by pulling the tab straight down. Keep diyas and candles away from walls to avoid soot marks, and choose washable paint in areas where oil lamps are lit.
If walls only have light marks and the colour is even, gentle cleaning with a damp cloth may be enough, especially on washable paint. Repaint if there are damp patches, peeling, cracks, stubborn stains or visible fading. Touch-ups rarely match old paint exactly, so repaint whole walls rather than patches.
