Trending kitchen colours now move beyond all-white: cobalt and teal blues for a modern look, soft pastel green, blue and pink for bright, airy spaces, and warm neutrals with gold accents for a retro feel. Colourful kitchen design ideas also include coloured sinks, appliances and fixtures. Choose washable, grease-resistant paint for kitchen walls and balance bold colours with neutral countertops or backsplashes.

Indian kitchens deal with oil, spices and turmeric stains, so mid-tone and warm colours such as mustard, sage green, terracotta, beige and warm grey hide marks better than pure white. Pair them with washable paint and a tiled or glass backsplash near the stove. Keep the wall behind the stove easy to clean with sheen or washable paint.
Use one colour for cabinets and a softer shade on walls, or split upper and lower cabinets into two colours, with darker below and lighter above. Tie them together with a neutral countertop and matching hardware. Choose colours that share undertones so they look planned, and test both colours in the kitchen's lighting before painting.
Dark colours can work in small kitchens if there is good natural or artificial light. Use them on lower cabinets or one wall and keep upper cabinets, walls or ceiling light. Glossy finishes on cabinets reflect light and prevent a small dark kitchen from feeling closed in. Under-cabinet lighting also helps.
Warm yellows, terracotta, peach, warm whites and wooden finishes make kitchens feel inviting. Pair them with warm white lighting and brass or copper accents. Avoid cold blue-toned whites, which can make kitchens feel clinical. Wooden open shelves, plants and warm-toned tiles also add warmth and make the kitchen feel lived-in.
Repaint walls, repaint or laminate cabinet shutters, change hardware, add a colourful backsplash with peel-and-stick tiles, and bring in coloured accessories such as canisters and rugs. Painting only the walls and changing handles can completely change the look at a fraction of renovation cost. Use paint suited to kitchens for durability and easy cleaning.
Kitchen walls often need repainting every two to four years because of grease, smoke and moisture. Washable paint and good exhaust ventilation extend this interval. Clean walls regularly to remove grease before it builds up, and touch up areas near the stove as needed. Keep leftover paint for matching repairs between full repaints.
