Modern living room colours and design focus on clean lines, balanced colour and a clear focal point. Popular ideas include pastel accents like mint, blush and lavender, monochromatic schemes in shades of one colour, neutral walls with bold furniture, dark paint for luxury, statement lighting, minimalist décor and floating furniture layouts. Blending modern colour schemes for living room walls with a few traditional pieces keeps the space warm.

Warm neutrals such as greige, off-white and beige, earthy tones like terracotta and olive, and deep shades such as navy or emerald on one accent wall suit Indian homes and handle bright sunlight well. Pair them with wooden furniture and brass or black metal accents for a modern Indian look.
Light, cool or neutral shades such as off-white, pale grey, soft sage and light greige reflect more light and make a living room feel larger. Painting the ceiling a shade lighter than the walls and keeping trims in the same colour as the walls also reduces visual breaks. Mirrors and minimal furniture also help.
It's a simple way to balance a colour scheme: about 60% of the room in a dominant colour (usually walls), 30% in a secondary colour (furniture, curtains) and 10% in an accent colour (cushions, art, décor). For example, a greige wall, navy sofa and mustard cushions. It creates balance and avoids a room looking either too plain or too busy, and it works with any colour scheme you choose.
Grey remains popular, but warmer greys and greige are now preferred over cold, blue-toned greys. In north-facing or dim rooms, choose greys with warm undertones and add warm lighting and wood. Grey pairs well with navy, mustard, blush and emerald accents, and suits both minimal and luxe styles. Choose a matt finish for a soft, modern look, and test samples at different times of day because grey shifts with light.
Layer three types: ambient lighting such as ceiling lights or cove lighting, task lighting such as reading lamps, and accent lighting such as wall washers or picture lights. Warm white bulbs make modern colours feel inviting. Dimmers allow you to change the mood from bright family time to relaxed evenings. Statement pendants or floor lamps can double as décor pieces, and lighting should highlight feature walls and artwork rather than flatten the room.
Add texture and warmth through wooden furniture, woven baskets, soft rugs, cushions and plants. Choose warm undertones in paint and use warm white lighting rather than cool daylight bulbs. Soft curtains that filter light, layered throws and a few personal items like books or family photos also make modern spaces feel lived-in. Avoid too many hard, shiny surfaces in one room.
